Contest!

So I need a business card design, but I'm terrible at drawing and photoshop and the like. Soooo... I'm asking my people with that experience to make one for me! If I choose your design I'll make you something pretty or give you a serious discount on a custom outfit or something. No one should have to work for free but I'm too broke to pay actual money.

So, Ali showed me where to get these mini business cards from Moo!. They're about half of a regular business card so yeah.

These cards are to start my own business which is going to go under the name bloomsinthenight (if you think its a lame name let me know because I'd like feedback on that too).

So let me know if you're interested and I'll give you the rest of the info. Thanks!

Quick Sewing Update

Ali's Bevor-gorget:

Seams glued and hand stitching completed. Grommeting either tomorrow or Wednesday as my parents are already asleep and would be most displeased if I were to start hammering away now.

Bridesmaid Muffs:
(This phrase makes me laugh every time I say it! : P)
Will complete one this evening that may or may not be used in the wedding depending upon how my fancy shmancy new serger handles faux fur.

Queen of Hearts:
My cyberlox came in from I Kick Shins's Etsy Page They are fabulous. Check them out here.I am now motivated to complete my costume, but need to finish Ali's project as much as feasibly possible without her being here to fit and place bits and such.

So, I'm off to make muffs. Huzzah!

Sewing update and interesting new ideas...

I will be detailing Ali's bevor-gorget tomorrow, not sure how long it will take as there are some hand sewing bits that I need to do. Sam finally let me borrow her face long enough to make the proper alterations. She was not amused.

In other exciting sewing news I've found the greatest website in the world. Spoonflower.com. Why is this site so awesome? You can make your own pattern and have it made into fabric at almost any weight. AND its eco-friendly. :)

That also means its pricey, but its one of a kind fabric that you will get no where else. Thus, win.

I found some super geeky prints on there that some people had already posted. (Oh you can also buy fabric patterns that other people have made which are usually really original and unique.) One specifically was made to look like a game of tetris. This got me to thinking. I know tons of geeky girls that would totally enjoy accessories and outfits made from their favorite past-times. I have a vision of this tetris dress and it excites me greatly. Chic with a touch of geek. : ) When I can afford the fabric I'm making it and that's all there is to it.

I talked to my friend Ed about it and he is down for helping me with the fabric pattern bit. Obviously I cannot use trade marked characters, but I can allude to things. This will be very, very fun. :)

Thoughts? Or am I just way too giddy about fabric?

Quick update on progress.

Feathers have been ordered for fascinators. I am devilishly excited.

My queen of hearts costume now has a more general design and I should start production next week.

I work on Ali's Bevor-gorget tomorrow and if I have enough eyelets, it shall be finished.

That is all.

There ain't no rest for the wicked, until we close our eyes for good...

So, I know I just updated with a New Year's Resolution post, but I've found that I have some sewing and craft project updates that need to be noted.

Ali's Bevor-gorget
Still in progress and depending upon my work schedule, I will finish it next week.

Queen of Hearts
Haven't touched since I "completed" the skirt. Now that I've got a serger, I can give it a proper hem. I still need to figure out the design for the top, but I've got plenty of fabric and time isn't currently an issue for that. Will hopefully be completed for Wicked.

Muffs
It has been decided that I will be creating muffs for my cousins wedding for us to walk down the aisle with. They're simple enough to make and I already have the material. Depending upon time I'd like to have them finished before I start working the playshop festival in Feb/March just so that they are completed and out of the way.

Fascinators
It has also been decided that I'm creating the fascinators that we will be wearing in the wedding. I'm not going to worry about those until the summer time. However I will be lurking for beads and feathers all the while to see what interesting ones I come up with.

Aunt Debbie's Dress
Since I'm the only one that can sew in my family I'm also making a dress for my Aunt Debbie to wear for my cousin's wedding. She's the mother of the bride and they like what I do. :P

Spiderweb top
This has been waiting to be done for quite some time. I was planning on making it in October for the Steampunk Indie Market in Brooklyn but that fell through as I ran out of time. I was going to make it sooner to wear to the club, however when my mother decided that I was getting a serger for Christmas, I decided to postpone so that I could make it more professional and fabulous. That's a weekend project when I have a Saturday off and nothing to do.

Dad's zipper
My dad wants me to replace a zipper on his vest thing with a metal one. I hate zippers... He just got a new vest though so this is no longer my number one priority.

Bags o' mending
My cousin and Uncle have both given me bags of mending to be completed at my discretion. Maybe a paying thing, but its family so I'll only ask for like $20 per bag or something since I've already had them since August.

Etsy Shop
Okay, so I know this isn't technically a craft project per say, but I've been told that I should start my own business and have been thinking about it for quite some time (if you haven't read any earlier entries). I'd hoped to have started it by October but money is generally an issue and so is space. So I'm hoping to clear out some things and start creating and have a store up by this summer. We'll see what happens with this one.

Corset
I've got the fabric to make a fabulous corset, but I haven't the time or anything else right now. Last on my list currently.

MY Bag o' Mending
This keeps growing and I've got quite a few old things to fix.

Dana's Halloween Costume
She wants to be Sleeping Beauty (Disney) in her blue dress. This will be something I start sometime over the summer.

Dana's Ren Faire Dress
I've got to take it in now that she's lost weight. This might wait until the summertime too since she'll be less busy then. :)

Wow, that's a lot... I've got a year packed full of sewing and crafting ahead of me. Wish me luck and better luck with my time management!

I get to host an event... for reals...

So, I am actually able to put on a Steampunk event at O.N.E. I got the okay today from the club owner and we're going to make it happen. I am so excited. I'm thinking that it would be late January or early February.

I have a lot to figure out and any thoughts or suggestions would be way helpful. I think the hardest part has been done for me as I have a space and do not have to pay for it. So now onto the entertainment and such. I'd like to find people local to the Philly area so that the Steampunk scene will grow in this area. We'll see what happens there.

A costume contest would be nice, I'd have to see what kind of funding/donations or whatever I can figure out.

Well, I've got my work cut out for me now. I'll keep you updated. :)

Busy, busy, busy...

I've been doing a lot since last I posted.

Last night I had the fastest interview, if you could call it that, ever. I applied to be a promoter for a weekly goth night at O.N.E. at Rittenhouse in Philly. The guy basically told me what it would entail how much I'd get paid and asked if I was still interested. It's $3 per person I bring in and I have the potential to make much more than that. It's by invite only so you have to be on the list or have a flyer with you in order to get in which ensures that I get paid. So this could potentially work out pretty well.

I can't quit TCP just yet since it is commission based, but it will be a nice additive to my income and it'll give me an excuse to go to all of the goth haunts that I've longed to go to for quite some time now.

So now I think I technically have 4 jobs? TCP, the library, club promoter, and commissioned artist/seamstress (combined it since neither is steady enough to call a full job). You'd think that I'd be making enough to move out by now right? Ugh...

It'd be great if I were able to plan an event or something of the like. Then I might be able to give back to those that have helped me thus far. That'd be so cool. : )

I also made some pirate costumes that were pretty lame and fail because I had 2 weeks to complete 3 costumes. Mind you they were simple, but it was difficult to get a final fitting and such. Soooo... I need to start making up contracts and saying no if I'm not given at least a month's notice.

Also, I really hope I get paid from Keila soon I've been waiting since September for a check from her which is pretty fail. Car insurance is due this month and so are two loan payments. Ick... and X-mas... stupid money.

Oh well. At least I've got another way to supplement my income. : )

Jesus was a zombie, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I would like to preface this with the fact that I do not hate others for their beliefs, whatever they may be.

I do however hate those that try to push their beliefs onto others in a manner that is both annoying and makes the pusher look like a moron.

With those things being said, I just got a face full of bs from my fundamentalist Christian brother who thinks that he's a prophet.

He hates Obama, but he's not a racist no... Some of his friends are black. Right... Also, I voted for Obama, and his reasoning is that I'm "out there somewhere".

I'm almost positive that he thinks that Satan has me and its his mission to try to convert me.

I can't even begin to describe the drivel that comes out of his mouth, but he keeps coming around and spreading it. It wouldn't be so bad if he was always this way. He's one of those "born again" Christians. I mean I remember he took me out to dinner at a bar, got drunk and then drove me home. So, I mean I guess he's better than he was but it's still annoying.

Ugh... siblings...

Walk, walk, fashion baby, Work it, I'm a freak bitch, baby...

I'm more than a little obsessed with Lady Gaga's new video and song Bad Romance. Mostly due to all of the Alexander McQueen that's floating around in it.

Anyway this is going to be a productive update, unlike my day today. : P

So I've picked up a commission for Pirate costumes for a family that I know. I need to have them finished by Black Friday ish. Nbd there as long as the woman gets the measurements to me. She won't let me do them for her however which is a little sketch, but it is what it is and if her stuff doesn't end up fitting, then it's because she gave me the wrong measurements.

My good friend Amanda wants me to make her a Ranka costume for February and I'm excited for that. I haven't done pink and frilly as of yet and it'll be an interesting challenge.

I've been working most recently on an art piece that I hope to display on Friday November 20th. I'm using black lace and I'm kind of exploring doll making, but kind of not. This is kind of an art for art's sake piece and thus far I'm liking where its going. I'll be attempting to finish it today/tomorrow.

Wednesday night I'll be at the Amanda Palmer show at the TLA, which I am super excited about. I bought my ticket for that months ago. It should be a good time. : )

So I'm keeping myself busy and attempting to keep my room clean.

Oh yeah, we got a transmission for Stella and will hopefully have her on the road by Thanksgiving. : )

Life isn't too too bad right now then I suppose. : )

And Everything was going so well...

My car broke down twice yesterday. The first time it was on my way to work and it was simply driving funky and wouldn't take gas. Then my dad okayed it for a trip on the turnpike and well, that was a mistake. On the Turnpike I heard a loud banging noise and thought I blew out my tire. Well, it turns out it was my transmission. I was towed home and now I've no car. Hurray...

The thing that sucks the most about it is that I was planning on heading up to Ramapo next week and now I don't think that I'll be able to. My plan was to visit with people on Tuesday and Wednesday and drive straight to work on Thursday.

Another annoying part is that my mother for some reason thinks that I don't have a right to be upset about it. Whenever I'm mad or upset she yells at me for feeling that way. I don't even understand it. I'm a human with emotions, and my car not being able to take me to freedom (or work, whatever) kind of sucks. Not the end of the world, but still sucks.

So with that being said, I'm going to get very busy with my costume as I've little time to prepare it.

PS Dana's corset turned out way better than I could've hoped for. yay for sewing!

"Fashion! turn to the left Fashion! turn to the right Oooh, fashion!"

The past couple of weeks have been like woah busy. Work has been hectic, I've been sewing and such and I helped Berít New York with two awesome events.

Last week was Obscura at QXT's which was pretty amazing. It was my first time ever at the goth themed club and it was so cool. Brit was dressing dancers for a performance which was pretty cool. We got to see the "backstage" of the club which is basically the old kitchen from the restaurant it once way many moons ago.

I also ended up meeting up with an old friend from high school whom I haven't seen in over seven or eight years. He goes by the name of Dorian now and it was totally awesome to see him. That reminds me, I should probably email him lol. Anyway, that show was a total success even though we did hours of work for a three minute performance, it was totally worth it.

This past weekend was the Steampunk Indie Market Fashion Show. There was press and there were cameras and there was rain. Lots and lots of rain. I really hope that the designers items didn't get ruined. I know Brit had an item that had fallen onto the ground and gotten soaked. It was a rough time at the event, but there were many beautiful things put on display. Brit will be vending again on November 21st at the Indie market if you haven't gotten your fill of steampunk goodness yet. : )

So the after party at The Way Station sponsored by Tor was awesome. I was so exhausted and wet though by the time I got there that I didn't end up staying very long. I did get to see Psyche Corporation in action though which was an awesome performance.

I'm definitely going back there one of these days when it's finally open for real. It's an awesome space to hang out and talk to people. Everyone should check it out. : )

Otherwise I'm going to be sewing like mad creating my halloween costume for Saturday... Silly me hasn't had the time to go fabric shopping or anything of the like until today. I'm also finishing Dana's corset for her Halloween costume tonight so I can ship it to her so she can have it by Friday at the very latest. Soooo... I'll be doing that not sleeping thing probably all week. Woo!

After Halloween's over... I'm not sure what I'm doing other than getting things ready for X-mas and working on outfits for Wicked and the Steampunk World's faire which are quite far away atm.

"I know! I just got chased out by the cell phone nazi!"

Yes, I was indeed the cell phone nazi at work. So sorry that you were breaking a library policy and I had to ask you to step, not out side, but into the foyer to finish your phone call. It's posted on the door as you walk in. I'm so glad that people pay attention...

In other library new I've had people yelling at me for fines under the denomination of $.50 all day today. People really are cheap. It doesn't bother me if there was an issue and we resolve it, but when people flat out deny that they ever took the book out and it is clearly on their record, its just sad. That $.30 goes towards things that the library could use and needs. Cheap bastards...

Also, I appreciate how on a Friday when we are severely understaffed everyone decides to come in five minutes before we close to check out dvd's only to find out that you're not using your own card. Then you decide that it's my fault that the name on the card belongs to your son who is not yet 18 and therefore is not allowed to check out any of our dvd's.

Then there are people who are generally nice. I like you people, come into the library more often. On that note there are also the too friendly patrons that like to tell you their life story  and say how nice your necklace is and ask you if you enjoy the Nightmare Before Christmas. Oh, and going to the bathroom and then asking to shake your hand... ewwwww... Thankfully we have hand sanitizer at the front desk for just those occasions.

Oh and smelly people, it would be nice if you bathed once in a while or smoked a few less cigarettes.

I found a blog that dispatches the goings on of a local library. I highly suggest it and will probably start blogging my own interesting experiences within the world of the public library. Yelling russian and smelly people are only the beginning.
This is the blog: www.mcsweeneys.net/

On that note I bid you adieu.
